Jobs success for Babcock apprentices

09 Aug 2011

Support services group Babcock has offered full time jobs to three quarters of the apprentices graduating from a four year course run in conjunction with training provider Linc Menai.

Babcock first approached Linc Menai, the training arm of Coleg Menai, to develop a tailored engineering apprenticeship programme that would feature one year of college-based study followed by three years working at RAF Valley. Babcock provides services, including the maintenance of Hawk aircraft, at the facility on the island of Anglesey.

Starting the course in September 2007, the 12 students from North Wales undertook a BTEC National Award in Engineering and Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) NVQ Level 2, a number of Key Skills and a National Certificate in Electrical Electronic Engineering. Nine of the group are now employed by Babcock at RAF Valley, with two finding jobs at other RAF bases.

"We are delighted that the apprentice programme has been a huge success and there has been high praise from colleagues and managers involved for all the apprentices," says Linc Menai managing director Lesley Thomas.

The engineering department at Coleg Menai worked with Babcock on assessment and training procedures, tailoring the programme to cover required competence routes including avionics, engine bay and ground radio.
